Peter Frost was for many years one of the best known writers and broadcasters in the camping and outdoor leisure field. For twelve years he edited the biggest circulation monthly camping and caravanning publication in the world. He is also author of the definitive Haynes Camping Manual and was responsible along with TV’s Julia Bradbury for Julia’s New to Camping website. In 2006 he retired as Director of Communications at the half a million strong Camping and Caravanning Club – an organisation that has been fighting for access to the countryside for more than a century. Today he continues to tour Britain and the world. With his wife Ann he has camped in more than forty countries across the globe. He continues to travel widely and to write about his adventures. For ten years Peter was the Secretary of State’s representative on the Broads Authority helping to run one of Britain’s wonderful National Parks, the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads. He also writes on boats and on politics, working class history, the environment and on food and drink as well as many more obscure subjects for the staunchly left-wing daily the Morning Star. His latest book is about the politics of Marilyn Monroe. This blog contains a wide range of his writings.

  1. I was disturbed to read the article by Peter Frost about Harry Roberts in last weekend’s edition of the Morning Star because it read like something I might find in a tabloid newspaper.
I was not clear from the article how my understanding of Roberts, who killed three police officers, was furthered and more importantly how it increased my understanding of people who kill.
As a teacher in prisons I would much rather have read about the process of Roberts’ rehabilitation rather than the catalogue of crimes that he and his mother allegedly performed.
How does Peter Frost know that Harry Roberts “showed no remorse” in nearly 50 years and was Frost present in the cookery classes where Roberts allegedly made “macabre apple pies”?
Personally I don’t agree that the killing of a police officer is more important than killing a newspaper seller or indeed anyone else so Frost’s concluding paragraph in quoting the sentencing judge “it is unlikely that any future home secretary should ever…show mercy” and that Teresa May has “upset the police” by agreeing to Roberts’ release once again strikes a rather right wing chord.
As for the additional information that the singing of “Harry Roberts is our friend he kills coppers” I would like to ask again where Frost’s evidence lies that such singing led to membership of the EDL? Conjecture surely! For the record I sang this song as an angry young socialist at the print workers’ demonstrations in Wapping in 1984.

  2. Dear Peter,
I wrote to you via the Morning Star, but I think it was not forwarded. I wanted to give you a copy of our report on the Gatwick landscape and wildlife which will be destroyed if the 2nd runway goes ahead there. I think you would be fascinated and outraged to see this gorgeous threatened landscape…an archaic meadows complex, a mile-long linear riverine ancient woodland with Small Leaved Lime, more ancient woodlands, veteran trees, etc etc. I would love to take you there. Do please get in touch,

PS I have had a feature in the Star myself…on the aborted FC forest sell-off
